“But while the Celtic Manor hotel acts as a comfort blanket for the chastened lawyer, it is also a bubble, where delegates are shielded from the court of public opinion.”
What tripe. You need to get out more John; you have tunnel vision perception of claimant personal injury lawyers. Turn out this year for the APIL conference was very low was just over 240 plus and there are thousands of people (not just solicitors) working in the personal injury sector. So nobody needs a comfort blanket and such a description is ridiculous. I think you just made that up, perhaps you thought it was a nice form of words for your article.
As for some of the comments below they are equally prejudiced and unhelpful. I’ll always turn down or cease to act for someone who is exaggerating their claim. I’m not interested in getting someone £1,000.00 to pay for their summer holiday or towards a new car or kitchen.
Writing biased (or otherwise) news stories for the Gazette is hardly stressful and you’ll never know or experience the stress and pressure of personal injury litigation. You’ll never have to have the anxiety of a Mitchell ruling (or other strike out Order) against you or fret about the professional negligence consequences.
You’ll never have to take clients through sensitive statements about sexual or psychological abuse or post traumatic stress disorder or take on their burdens and worry for them. I hope you never lose a limb or suffer a work related disease. It’s not nice and ruins not just your life but often places great financial and emotional strain on families. Paying the bills becomes very tough.
Feature writes don’t really suffer stress or financial worries. Seriously what do you really know about the work of the majority of hard working caring personal injury lawyers? Maybe you should have undertaken a bit more research before publishing this article. Maybe it might have added some value if you had actually spoken to a few claimant lawyers?
So tired of hearing the run of the mill criticism of claimant lawyers and the spouted rubbish regarding claim capture and wealth generation being the main goals for taking up this career.
