This situation was entirely predictable though apparently the SRA, the Society and the tertiary educators didn't see it coming. It is demographics and the inevitable result of an increase in the number of lawyers per capita from around 1:1200 in 1975 to 1:385 today. Despite being a society more willing to go to law than earlier generations England like many (all?) other Common Law jurisdictions is becoming over-lawyered. It's all very unfortunate but not entirely doom and gloom as many new work opportunities are being created in the law, some of which are very well paid. The profession is at a cross-roads and needs good leadership to get through the changes it is now facing. Who is going to provide it is another matter....
