Does this not depend on exactly how Ashurst goes about achieving this target? Clearly if it is a blunt quota system that would be ridiculous and likely discriminatory. However, if they change criteria for equity partnership and apply it to everyone then this seems fine. If the research tells them that child care is an impediment to the 40% target then their criteria should change to allow for that.

Any work practices not consistent with child care duties should not be rewarded irrespective of a solicitor's status. So, no requirement to stay beyond 4.30pm, to arrive before 9.30am, to work during school holidays, to entertain clients in the evening, to travel overseas at short notice. Provided that a man is also eligible for equity partnership whilst observing these work practices then what would the problem be?
