@ Ashley Balls: the hurdle your argument fails to clear is the fact that the clerks you mention had been in practice for 5-10 years or more before they were unleashed on the public without close supervision; they were not, as now, trained by CLT over a weekend!

Since you seem to have have been asleep in a box (like the Blue Peter tortoise) since the 1980s you perhaps have missed that it was the presence of untrained paralegals as legal service providers in firms that made the Carter proposals so easy to justify and implement:

Let me put it another way for you, as Lord Carter no doubt mused: how can you say it is not in the interests of justice to allow non lawyers to provide legal services when you yourselves have been using unqualified personnel... since when was it? 1970s/1980s.

Your stereotyping of all lawyers as rock clapping troglodyte Luddite reactionaries does not help either...but then, when did your sort ever think of the wider profession.
