Obviously there are differences of intensity between FGM and wearing a burqa.
However, they are both practices that, despite sometimes being enthusiastically embraced by women, are in effect ways of crippling women from enjoying a full role in society as equals to men.
As for micro skirts, I still maintain that these fall within one of our accepted norms of not being fully nude in public. There IS a ban on wearing nothing.
There is a large difference between broadcasting one's identity to the world (whether this takes the form of religious dress, hair styles, tattoos, jewelry etc), and having that very identity cut you off from the rest of the world.
France's law be criticised for being overly paternalistic, but its driving rationale is the protection of women, not intolerance of Islam.
