To respond to the points well made by John Timbrell at 7.14pm, legal wigs are not sheepskin, but tail hair from a horse.

I am a solicitor-advocate who chooses not to wear a wig as I believe that horses tail hair looks best on top of a horse's arse. This is an opinion I have often expressed to opponents and judges alike. I, too, have experienced some small degree of hostility from both quarters. Perhaps there is a connection.

Lord Harley of Davidson (or whatever his name is) will be reassured to know that I saw the same judge rebuke an eminent (and local) QC just last year. He barked some admonitions in the silk's direction like a junk-yard dog leaving everyone embarrassed and stunned. My learned leader, for it was he, remained as unmoved as a Brahmin bull and preserved the dignity expected of one in such a position. The learned Judge, however, displayed all the sophistication and gravitas of a park drunk.

Perhaps he gets a bit grumpy from time to time, but someone needs to have a word with him about choosing the correct time and place for such outbursts. To take advantage of his position in Court to launch what was at times a very personal attack smacks of bullying.
