These are all down to the unintended consequences of legal services reform.
Rightly or wrongly, before LSA 2007 roles were clear (Barrister's duty to the court, Solicitor's duty to the client) and understood by the public. Now there are several confusing levels of representation including law centres, charities and employed solicitors, where even judges can't be certain which Harry Potter Lawyers have rights of audience and which don't.
