The ASHE figures exclude those in self employment, who will tend to be higher earning solicitors. So they don't really allow comparison of the average income of solicitors as a profession with the income of those in other occupations where the scope for self employment is much less (train drivers etc).

That's not to say that there aren't sections of the profession woefully misrepresented as 'fat cats' but we shouldn't stoop to the MOJ's level in misusing statistics to get a headline.
