Interesting comment from Anonymous @ 3.59pm. Marx talked about the proletarianisation of the profession over 150 years ago in the Communist Manifesto; capitalism 'has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage labourers.'

You may think that Marx as way ahead of his time but actually 19th century law firms employed large numbers of low paid managing clerks who carried out legal work. In London City firms a ratio of partners to clerks of 1:20 was not uncommon but it could go has high as 1:100. History repeating itself perhaps?
