The government wants the MoJ to act as a business and pay its way but because staffing costs particularly when you add in pension costs and other benefits are so high this means the fees have to go up and up to balance the books. The government is happy because it looks as though it is tackling the deficit and the staff are happy because they keep their generous benefits but the poor old public pay through the nose. I can assure you that a bog standard executive officer (educated to A level grade) when you add in his pension and other benefits is on significantly better pay than a legal aid solicitor.
