I wish it did improve diversity, but as long as the argument is one of the principle rather than practice, speeches like this are waffle.

The larger companies are paying over the min wage but haven't really improved diversity (they've improved their minority quota but they're still hiring from the same socio-economic class), the middle firms aren't hiring because they're still divesting themselves of the areas of law that aren't profitable after gov changes / rebalancing, and the small firms (of which I own one) are on their knees after each successive raft of changes.

I do feel sorry for this chap tho. He knows that other than at the large law firms he's presiding over a profession in decline with no apparent way of fighting back. And like the Guardian newspaper, which LawSoc increasingly resembles, it can only retreat into this kind of ill thought out ivory tower I have a dream speeches.
