Where's the need for Tesco Law and how can lawyers fees be too expensive for the market?

I helped an elderly friend sell her £95K house recently using the estate agents Solicitors, a medium sized firm with an excellent reputation.

Total Legal Fees INCLUDING disperments (and £300 cashback at the end), were £245!!!

Out of that, i reckon the Solicitors probably saw £100 at best.

Estate agents fees were £2,900 from memory with no adverts placed except on their own website (it sold straight away).

Maybe the Government can explain how someone that answers the phone, places adverts and shows people around houses is worth £2,900, when someone with 4 years University, 2 years on the job training and a whole string of highly complex and technical experience is worth @ £100 for the same job.
