Saying there is no financial benefit to the public purse does not go far enough. There will be a considerable cost to the public purse:-

- far fewer claims will be made so much reduced recovery of CRU benefits and hospital charges

- £50 per motor policy premium reduction (if it actually happened) will cost £100M+ a year in lost IPT

- Previously a very large number of claimants would receive a relatively small amount of compensation each, which they would then usually spend - thus boosting the economy, leading to increased VAT and corporation tax receipts. Now a handful of already very profitable insurance companies will make even bigger profits. The UK will see very little of this as they all have tax avoidance arrangements in place.

- Far less VAT and tax from Claimant solicitors and their employees, plus benefits to be paid to people made redundant

So the cost to the taxpayer is actually huge.

The insurers do donate lots of money to the Tories though, so there are some winners here. as the headline correctly says.
