If the Sharia courts are to be reviewed the review there is an argument that it should include other broadly similar institutions such as the Beth Din (the Jewish religious court).

It is my understanding (which may be wrong) that parties to a dispute can settle it under any set of rules they mutually agree to use and the outcome is treated like any other arbitration. An example would be use of the Nominet rules to decide disputes over internet Domain Names. As with all arbitrations a decision which involves parties taking actions that could not comply with national civil law will be unenforceable.

It appears to me that the biggest question about Sharia courts surrounds the degree of coercion used to induce parties to use them and agree to be bound by their decisions.
