Might the decline in standards (if such a standard can be proved) due in part to criminal defence law being unrewarding both financially and through political bashing? I suspect the old talent have packed it in, the young talent have decided that it might at least be financially rewarding (if nothing else) to specialise elsewhere, and everyone else courageous enough to keep going are so downtrodden by it all that they can't give every case the due attention it deserves.
