Improved IT will not make the life of the average judge less miserable. It is the lack of common sense at the top and the consequent imposition on them of ever more complex rules, often to no apparent purpose, which is demoralising. But they only have themselves to blame. They turned a deaf ear to the warnings which came loud and often from solicitors and other litigators whose intimate knowledge of the way litigation works should have resulted in their fears about the reform of civil justice being taken seriously. Instead the untested ideas of individual senior judges were treated as being in some way the unchallengeable word of God.

The reforms which began in the late 90s have created an administrative monster. Subsequent attempts to steer the monster onto a less damaging course have only made it worse - and now Jackson wants to get his hands on the tiller once more. I see judicial morale plummeting even further.
