I think the term " solicitor" can be regarded as being generic in the public mind insofar as when they walk into the offices of Messrs Sue, Grabbitt and Runne they think they are seeing a solicitor when in actual fact they may be seeing a legal executive, paralegal, costs draftsperson or employed barrister instead.
However, there are other circumstances when they don't want a solicitor - on another thread last week I mentioned the case of a good friend of mine who, faced with a VAT problem, wanted to be advised by his accountant throughout, not a solicitor.
And remember the thousands of competent ex-solicitors out there who are claims handling or will writing because a statutory redundancy payment won't capitalise a practice or fund retraining.
