@ Shaun Ryan - perhaps if you turned your oh-so-powerful telescope the right way around, you might spot that decisions to charge, to prosecute, and on sentencing are often made by people who happen to be white, and that there is at least a legitimate question to answer as to whether or not black (and, often, working-class white) people are treated exactly the same as their white counterparts, given the same case facts. Could there be unconscious (and sometimes racist) bias at play? If you think that that chap who fare-dodged for years while travelling from Shenfield, or the city financier in similar circumstances (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/13/man-avoids-prosecution-pay-back-43000-train-fares) would have avoided court appearances if their surnames had started with "Ade," then I have a wonderful little runabout that you might be interested in buying.
