PS The only redemption I can think of for this idea is the reintroduction of compulsory scale fees for conveyancing, mortgage and probate work. That would solve the problem of client disappointment and the cheap jack under cutters at a stroke.

In France conveyancing is charged at 0.9% of the purchase price, although the notary generally acts for both parties and charges only the purchaser, and 1% of the value of any mortgage. So on a purchase at, say £300,000 and a mortgage of £200,000 he would receive £2,700 + £2,000, £4,700, all payable by the purchaser. And they are required by their professional body to charge these sums! How about that, Elizabeth?

Their probate charges are unregulated so they can bill whatever they can get away with... and do!

And their estate agents charge 6% as in USA. In fact I think I might consider retraining as one.
