This is clearly a subject dear to the hearts of all and there is a great deal of heat being generated. However on the fundamental point of the legal effect of the referendum it cannot be argued that the result has the force of law although it clearly has enormous political weight. It is now Parliament that has to decide and I personally am appalled that the matter is apparently exclusively in the hands of the executive. The traditional course is for the government to present a proposal to Parliament and for the whole matter to be debated in (dare I say it) the usual manner. (By the way the majority of the electorate did not say that it preferred out to remain - it was a relatively small majority of that part of the eligible electorate that voted to leave.)
