The cry of the more prudent Europhiles, on this website as elsewhere, has always been to the effect that they weren’t seeking to reverse the referendum decision but only wanted to be sure that in implementing it the “rule of law” was upheld. Very well: now is the time for them to prove the sincerity of their claim. Some time ago I asked one of them (I forget who) how he would propose to implement the decision at all in the face of a court judgment such as has now been handed down – given that there was no prospect of a parliamentary majority for “Brexit”. He didn’t answer; neither so far as I recall did anyone else. By their silence, even more than by their present (and let’s hope short-lived) jubilation, they show that they were well aware all along that such a ruling, if upheld by the Supreme Court, effectively nullifies the referendum. What then?
