David is surely right. And Michael, we've had this conversation before. I seem to remember your agreeing with me that there was no way the referendum verdict could have been made any more binding than it was. So how is Brexit to be implemented at all (never mind "getting it right") in the face of this judgment? That is the issue; and I think you'll find that "rule of law" considerations are by no means all on the Remain side. That sly remark of yours about Brexiteers being hoist with their own petard in the matter of parliamentary sovereignty is a frivolous non-argument, and I can't believe you don't know it.

Someone earlier spoke grandiosely of "having the courage to stand up to those who talk of riots in the streets". It doesn't take much courage to stand up to talkers, and in the unlikely event of actual riots the long-suffering police will be our proxies. On the other hand, let us hope - those of us who care for national independence, democracy and anything truly to be termed the "rule of law" - will have the resolution if need be to defend the decision of 23rd June against the best efforts of two Establishments to overthrow it.
