Diane,

it is not incumbent on a MP to vote as their constituents voted, we have representative democracy not a college of delegates.

The role of an MP is to represent his or her constituents not slavishly follow their 'intention' however so cast or expressed.

Were this not the case and it was a constitutional convention that MP's follow their constituent's 'wishes' we would still have corporal and capital punishment, homosexuality would still be a criminal offence etc etc etc.

This is the message that we need to be heard along with the clarion call to support the rule of law as without a basic understanding of our constitutional settlement the risk of public unrest is greater and the tinder pile (apropos the time of year) can easily be lit by a spark from an ill considered tabloid and an ignorant public.
