David, I agree: it will be what the Supreme Court decides, whether it upholds the High Court decision, adapts it in some ways (subtly or not) or disagrees completely.

I do hope the Government is analysing the judgment carefully to work out exactly how much Parliament has to be involved in the process: while I (personally) think Parliament must be involved (whatever the SC may eventually decide), it is obvious that having the negotiations and process effectively conducted in public is not the best way to proceed.

While the whole business is endlessly fascinating, at bottom it is rather a shame that this mess arises because of (a) divisions within the Tory party; (b) Cameron's blithe assumption he could deal with the divisions by a very simple (too simple, as is now evident) referendum; and (c) the Government's complete failure to think through the exit process before the referendum (or indeed in framing the question), let alone the evident failure of the leading Brexit advocates to spend any effort in working out the necessary process in advance either.
