As an aside (11.24 here), I'm a white male, albeit not old and not privately educated or "from money" (do people still say that sort of thing?).

Merit gets you so far, but the judiciary currently has a massive problem with diversity even as between men and women, let alone in relation to socio-economic and ethnic background. At the current rates of change, it will be AD 2500 before there is anything remotely close to a diverse bench.
