The headline is misleading, as are some of the comments from the Claimant lobby. If a reduction in the number of alleged Whiplash claims is achieved, then Motor premiums will tend to decrease, although that must be balanced against other factors, such as future inflation. the figure of £40 is an estimate only and the changes to claims experience will not happen overnight, but take time to be confirmed. When they are, all Insurers will have to respond, whether they have pledged to, or not, by reason of competition forces. IPT is a separate issue and is a tax on consumers, collected by reluctant insurers on the government's behalf. Again, only time will tell how the increase might affect the overall level of premiums written by the insurance market and underwriting results, but it should not be confused with the possible effects of CPR changes.
