Perhaps the problem is, for both sides of the profession, that we are told that we must not be aloof or professionally snobbish, that we must more closely reflect the society in which we live and work, that we must relate to the lives of our clients. It seems that we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
The harsh reality is that the society in which we live is no longer a very pleasant one. Wealth has become the idol of worship for the masses, no matter how it is acquired. Consequently, aspirations outstrip cultural education. In such a society, what else do we expect from a profession which is told to mirror that society!
Sadly, noblesse oblige is no longer a concept that is recognised in society any more, and we are the poorer for it.
