It's not the ability of two people to end their marriage by consent in a much shorter period of time than the current law provides, that troubles me. If both parties are satisfied that their relationship has run it's course and they want it to end, then the law should facilitate that decision, not frustrate it. What I am uneasy about is a position where one party can arbitrarily and unilaterally end the relationship without having to demonstrate at least good cause, if not some fault element by the other party.
The danger is that marriage loses all significance as a demonstration of commitment one to another, and I do not suggest it is the only such demonstration of commitment but it is used universally in, so far as I am aware, every culture.
Notwithstanding some of the comments here, marriage is still an important union for many people; if it is seen without the significance of its intended permanence, the whole purpose of it is devalued so don't enter in to it.
