Anon @15.04: no, I don't think it is really a political role, but since non-lawyers were appointed it has become one - and I don't think most lawyers LCs acted without political considerations in mind. I don't like it becoming more of a political role, but that is the reality.

As for Truss being replaced, if she is I suspect it will have little to do with her competence (or lack) in the role, more to do with May dispensing patronage as she considers appropriate following the election. If there is little change, les chance of moving Truss; if May's majority is increased, more chance, as there will be other mouths to feed. While Truss's competence is not in my view likely to be a serious consideration, had she been excellent (in achieving the political goals she was set) she might be moved on to use her talents in another department; had she been dire (from a political viewpoint) she could well be sacked (but probably would have been by now - the fact she hasn't been suggests she is doing the right thing politically).

I think she's been rotten from a legal perspective, but I don't think the Government (or indeed most governments) regards the law as anything much more than an irritating brake on political or doctrinal ambitions. Which is of course part of its constitutional function.
