John Lewis don't figure in the media as a company that has a lot of staffing issues so for that reason alone Mr McMillan is worth listening to. A person who does not fit into the organisational culture very often poses more management problems than they are worth.
Many years ago I worked with a consultant in A&E. His view was, in recruiting middle grade doctors, that he would prefer someone who scored satisfactory and knew their limitations (he was willing to accept more call outs) provided they were reliable and were able to communicate properly with patients. He did not want someone brilliant with but with health or work life issues. It usually meant a man, whose first language was English.
And I don't see that as unreasonable.
I have no issue with equality of opportunity, which means women and minorities must be allowed to fail. What I object to is positive discrimination to ensure equality of outcome. Choices have consequences and those who make certain choices should have to accept the consequences of those choices.
