John Hall (15:33). John, "Remain" was arguably the safe option only on the premise that the EU really is a status quo. But it isn't. It's a work in progress - progress, in its own words, towards ever-closer union. That means a progressive transference of allegiance and obedience to a power whose future policies and actions we would be obliged to support but which we would have no democratic control over. If Europhiles don't believe that, then they don't believe the repeated assurances of the object of their affection. Some of the fruits of ever-closer union have recently appeared in the EU's meddling in Ukraine and the consequent heightening of tension in eastern Europe. Membership of the EU has never been my idea of a safe option, or even a sensible option, for Great Britain. I mean no disrespect to that "educated elite" of yours if I point out that people may be highly intellectual in their own field but evince a deplorable lack of political intelligence and historical sense.
