This is an extraordinary conversation. In the magistrates courts, in any case involving domestic violence, the defendant is routinely forbidden to cross examine the complainant. If unrepresented, the court appoints a solicitor to conduct the cross examination at public expense. The defendants right to challenge the case against him is not impaired and the complainant is not subjected to further abuse. It is a mystery that this straightforward arrangement was not applied in the Family Court long ago.
