Surely, these rules are there to facilitate justice and to prevent the courts from being unnecessarily clogged up. If a time limit can't be met than it is only right and proper that the other side should be informed as to why that is so, in order to be allow each side time to prepare a sufficiently well considered case. I get the impression that unforeseen, unagreed delays are a crude strategy employed by lousy or inefficient lawyers, simply there to gain an unfair advantage. That is not good for anyone.
