It isn't a solicitor's job to avoid doing damage to the reputation of the armed forces. It is to represent his clients even where, as here, it turns out that they have been lying.

I started out following the reports on the case against Day with a sense of moral outrage. As more and more details of the charges came out, though, it became more and more obvious that they were nonsense. This reached its height with the revelation that there is a previously unsuspected professional obligation not to hold news conferences, or at least not to forcefully express your client's complaints at one. As for the reference to "bribes", a search of my internal emails on a few cases involving the amounts demanded for responding to a Witness Summons will find a great deal stronger language than that.

The SRA should be acknowledging that things went wrong and that lessons will be learnt. I'm not holding my breath, though.
