The whole situation is a disgrace but I'm not sure we should criticising our own profession. The civil legal aid statistics quoted are an appalling indictment of government policy on legal aid. This has been going on for years. There was Jack Straw's "franchising" policy which always had as its ultimate objective the culling of legal aid solicitors. And there was Tony Blair's disgraceful and historically illiterate decision to appoint "Lord Chancellors" who weren't lawyers.
In came the Tories by name rubbing their hands in glee at the behaviour of these sulliers of the honourable name of the Labour Party. Nincompoops like Grayling and Truss with no understanding of law and no respect for lawyers cosied up to the likes of the Daily Mail and its contempt for any separation of powers doctrine. Civil legal aid has been destroyed in this country.

Everybody who suffered as a result of Grenfell should have free legal advice and representation. Will it happen? Of course not. We have a PM who is impotent, malign and maladroit. There are more malign figures standing behind her waiting their chance to throw her aside.
And finally we have Brexit and the rush to disintricate the country from the European Court of Justice which goes at least some way to do what it says on the tin. English Conservative justice? There is none really. It's not our fault. Let's not beat ourselves up. Ultimately it's the "will of the people". They've voted them in time after time. Because I suppose people think it won't happen to them. But it does. England is not a caring country, and is more American in outlook than European. The rest of the UK is different, but the English take no notice of their views.
