Anon 18 July 2017 15:41: I'm a solicitor for 20 years now. We all know legal services and the amount and complexity of the underlying law and task varies hugely. Some client work is routine and significantly administrative, often delegated to trainees. Such as administering estates. Hugely expensive when charged on an hourly rate or estate % fee, and fees which typically have no relationship to the value or complexity. Applying for a power of attorney is incredibly simple for anyone who has the ability to read, grasp the options, meaning and implications. Rule of thumb, anyone who can fill in a tax return. I found that out when doing one for a relative. All done very efficiently and quickly on the OPG website and put into effect. Any queries and the OPG helpline clarify. No need for a solicitor at £250 plus VAT per hour upwards. The UK legal profession is an absolute asset but there are many antiquated parts of the way it does business which everyone recognises, but which is so slow to update. Partly because there is so little transparency. One reason this survey is quoting 40% of clients finding legal services not good value. A terrible indictment. If that was feedback to an individual firm, the managing partner would have serious issues.
