I am fully behind the need for a serious review of legal aid (and its wider availability), however there will come a point at which in cases such as this where the funding should be withdrawn.

Sadly the political mood is such that, in cases such as this (were funding to have been available) that withdrawing funding would be politically unacceptable the result being that scarce public funds would continue to be spent on matters with little / no merit.

While cases such as this will attract public sympathy and monies the real damage is done where the case is unattractive and controversial and it is in these areas where we need proper funding.

Justice in its wider context is the glue that holds the fabric of society together and to weaken the bonds between the threads that bond us together is not only short sighted but offensive and economically illiterate. I say this as a dyed in the wool Tory I would have thought that good Conservative principles would have allowed for the repair of the damage done by new Labour and previous Conservative administrations.
