Governments of all stripes have been trying to whittle away at legal aid since shortly after I qualified in 1981 so I don't think this is a party-political issue. But actually I think there would be genuine public interest in this; it is precisely the sort of case, (as isthe Grenfell Tower disaster) where public interest and sympathy is engaged and the mesage could be got across, where it is much harder to do where the person in need of representation is not a sympathetic character. Newspapers print what they think interests their readers and a lot of readers could imagine themselves or members of their family facing this sort of issue, whereas being wrongly arrested seems remote. A few bits posted on social media could be helpful - you don't need access to the press these days to raise public awareness.
