I was admitted over 30 years ago. I just about remember the Solicitors’ Finals. My daughter has just completed and got her results from the LPC at Chester. It is a much better course than I undertook, the standard of instruction is much better, the stress levels seem similar.

My concern is with the academic ability of those taking the course. Frankly many of them should not be. In “my day” admission to the course was limited to the number of places available on the course. Admissions to the profession broadly equated to those leaving, creating stability. Now many providers are able to offer the LPC. Sole criteria for admission is a course fee of £12000. There is a clear conflict of interest in that the providers are not acting in the best interests of the applicants. Some should simply be told they do not have the ability to take the course or join the profession.

Perhaps entry criteria for the LPC should include a requirement for the offer of a training contract. Ultimately fairer than saddling students with further debt.

No. I haven’t given my daughter a training contract. She will be working in another part of the country for a firm I have never had any connection with.
