How do you measure time spent in specialising in a legal subject? if it is billable hours, then some City lawyers may achieve this by the time they are 3 years qualified. But processing due diligence or disclosure exercises (for example) may not be a good indicator of expertise in anything other than due diligence or disclosure.

If the test is whether you have sufficient experience of advising, researching, managing, negotiating, litigating, drafting, etc to be a holistic, rounded lawyer, capable of being a partner, then maybe you need to ensure you have a smaller number of hours on each topic. And different people learn at different speeds, using the talents they were born with and have developed. And different roles may require different levels of expertise in a wider or narrower range of subjects.

So, let's not focus on an arbitrary number of hours.
