Until I recently retired I have been mediating a substantial number of disputes very often between family members. This has given me plenty of insight into the depths some individuals will sink and the negative side of family life. However, overall, families work well together and Powers of Attorney are very desirable. I entirely disagree with the judge.

My newly registered LPA arrived this morning. Having experienced the problems of my in-laws (ten years of dementia and eight years, so far, in a home for one and a very unnecessarily extended and difficult death of the other) I have coupled the LPA with an Advance Direction which makes it clear that I want to be switched off when the quality of my life is sub-zero. I trust my family, and the risk of being kept alive with prolonged pain and indignity far outweighs any theoretical risk of being ripped off.
