I am pleased that more funding is being made available in this sensitive area but please make sure that there is a genuine 'equality of arms' as there may be situations in which both sides need assistance.

Also please tread very carefully when it comes to questions about gender identity and young people.

A case in point is the recent news coverage regarding parents taking their child (A) out of school because of the school's response to a 'boy' (B) who appears to be struggling with 'his' gender identity and is reported as coming to school on some days dressed as a girl. The school appears to be implying that (A) could be guilty of 'transphobic behaviour' because he doesn't know how to react to (B) who on some days dresses as a boy and on other days dresses as a girl. No wonder (A) is confused.

When it comes to looking at the issue of discrimination how do you resolve the situation where (B) has the right to dress as 'he' chooses and be addressed by whichever name 'he' chooses that day but this leaves (A) completely confused?

Boys and girls are essentially equal but does this mean that we should allow them to 'be' what, in biological terms, they are not? If we allow this, then how do we manage it in respect of the other children?

EHRC need to tread carefully.
