The same old chestnut again. Sorry - the law is complex (particularly property/conveyancing law, as Stephen Larcombe has rightly said below) and in addition, the burden of regulation and compliance on solicitors has increased considerably (for example, in the areas of client identity verification and money-laundering). In addition, if the obligations and risks are increasing, together with the cost of indemnity insurance, why should people expect to pay less? A properly qualified and competent solicitor is there to protect the client (not "consumer"). Entry into the profession, and qualification, should be made more rigorous, not less, so we can weed out the monkeys who charge peanuts and cannot possibly provide a comprehensive service for so little. If you buy the cheapest can of beans you may end up with indigestion...
