A very well-considered post by Anon 0853, and an informative one (because doubtless well-checked) in the statement " Nor is there in any other jurisdiction", but I wonder if that implies 'Common Law'.
Yet I still don't want politicians to use their 'consciences' - always a religious idea when, long ago, I was growing up, and now, how would neuro-scientists analyse it, when they have learnt that we act before we have actually 'decided' to do so? - in order to behave as my overlords rather than my employees.
I still take the point of his final warning. We mostly, I think, support democracy on the basis that we'll lose some decisions to the benefit of a larger number of our fellow-citizens, while assuming -incorrectly, as Brexit has proved - that politicians would never provide for a Yes/No decision on a national matter more than slightly less imperative than "War or No war?".
