Without knowing whether someone is gay or hates cats or is a Muslim Anglican Catholic or an atheist or is a conservative or a socialist it is impossible to discriminate for or against that person on that ground. It is probably extreme to establish separate public registers to record everyone's stance on each one of these possible grounds for discrimination to ensure prospective clients are fully aware of the person's stance and can then make a conscious decision not to discriminate. (There would seem to be privacy issues). Likewise for other lesser forms of compulsory public disclosure.

How important is it to a prospective client that any of these matters are known? It may be important however to gay or lesbian lawyers or Anglican Catholic Buddhist or Muslim lawyers, but surely the concerns of the prospective client are paramount. If the prospective client wants to engage say a gay Catholic or atheist lawyer it is the client's business to make relevant enquiries, unless of course there is a public or some other register.
