The reason for low salaries is..purely and simply...greed...the same greed that killed legal aid....that paved the way for the opening up of legal services...that has flooded the market with low pay pandering consolidators instead of enterprising profit generating rainmakers...in smaller firms that same greed is further demonstrated by the wholesale abandonment of proper succession planning with older partners lingering on instead of having the decency to retire and to let the younger members step forward as part of that sensible succession plan...but no...their plan is to squeeze out just a wee bit more before they abandon the sinking ship to intervention or to a merger they know will rob their staff of any future...some firms have not paid salary increases for ten years or more...and even no they are trying to fix low salaries on a national basis (without reference to London or Southern weighting) while bemoaning the lack of talent....there is no lack of talent...there is only a lack of gullible fools prepared to be taken in by the promises employers have no intention of ever keeping
