This new route in to the profession is a ridiculous idea. If we want to open up the profession and stamp out discrimination, laudable aims imo, there are much better ways to achieve this. For example, one of the city firms recently recruited trainees i believe based on the quality of a submitted essay, rather than using standard application forms. The result was a considerably wider spread of new trainees from a much wider number of universities, rather than the Oxbridge/Russell group bias that standard recruitment practices lead to. At the firm I trained at the head of HR was obsessed with getting Oxbridge graduates in and even once asked me as a commuter to try and persuade a reluctant prospective trainee (who would also have had a long commute) to join the firm. Given the intense competition for such contracts anyone else expressing any doubts would have had their offer swiftly withdrawn!
