anon @ 12.55 - there are many good reasons for using a lawyer during litigation. Advising on the substantive law, analysing the strength of the case, etc... are all aspects of litigation that would be very difficult to distil into something that could be covered by a simple online guide.

However, if we as a profession are relying on the ability to comply with technical, procedural rules of service to justify our involvement, I think society would rightly castigate us.

Aside from anything else, I suspect there has been more than one solicitor caught out by email service rules.
