I am greatful you have written this article Mr Walters so I may have the opportunity to comment on a issue which is of importance to me. Your article raises important points however your last sentence is I beleive the real question that many in the legal profession fail to comprehend. The truth of the matter as I see it and as hard as it may appear to many to digest is that the regulators are actually trying to protect the legal profession. Now hold on a minute let me finish. I can actually sense the repulsion of some reading this comment. The legal profession as a whole does not have a "good" and I use the word sparingly public reputation or image at the moment.
Whatever the reason for such is irrelevant although a list could be compiled as long as the abyss. The fact is technology and the digital age has help to spread this negative perception. To help combat this perception, protect the profession and restore public confidence (not easy tasks to balance) actions have to be taken to send a clear message and show the regulator has some teeth and means business. What good is a regulator otherwise. Unfortunately some in the legal profession have not woken up to the realities of the internet age and the ramifications of the "infomation society" that now exist in fact and reality. I read an article today that highlights the trial of bots to do work that would normally require a legal professional and the rise of AI is also another matter on the frontier. In conclusion when the dust settles many established members of the legal profession like many other professions will either adapt or become relegated. One thing is certain change comes for all of us in different forms and from my perspective the regulators are reacting to the current changes to protect the profession as a whole and restore public confidence.
