Thankfully there are professionals who have been able to provide sensible explanations to counter the ill informed hysteria surrounding this decision. Sadly but all too predictably the BBC has been right in there with tabloid style speculation, fuelled by seeking the opinion of 'experts' who have failed to tell the public why this is not a scandal rather than the way the system balances competing and conflicting interests. Yvette Cooper led the usual knee jerk which we have come to expect from politicians when it is they who are responsible for the rules by which the Parole Board operates. There is argument for greater openness but there are reasons why we have the system we have not least that some victims themselves may be unhappy with publicity, even anonomised, assuming that can be satisfactorily achieved. I suspect we are now going to get a 'something must be done' response which will only create further unexpected problems in future which will only surface long after those responsible have gone onto more lucrative positions.
